Ecological Jesus
Just as I was born with eyes and brown hair I was born with that special love for the animals and the EARTH… That’s why you, from time to time, will hear me talk about these things.
Take heed to this verse, which translates literally into English:
“When they had all had enough to eat, He said to his disciples, ‘GATHER the pieces that are left over. Let NOTHING be wasted.” (John 6:12)
This was one of those ‘enlightened’ moments when I had a half empty bottle of water in my hand thinking about where to put it…
Remembering this simple verse of the Bible, I went back home and tried to figure out just where my bottle would be taken after having quenched my thirst…
Oh, was that one of those moments of surprise and shock that I can not help to telling you about!
Look what would have happened to my little bottle had it not been recycled:
1 – Ok, it would fallen from my hand, into the ’normal’ trash can and would have mixed with all kinds of leftover food, batteries and a thousand pieces of debris.
2 – then it would have gone to the landfill and there it would have stayed, for years and years, decaying and eventually contaminating the groundwater.
3 – maybe it would have fallen off the side of the garbage truck, or into a drainage ditch or be left on the beach…
4 - if it had landed on the beach, over time it would have gotten brittle under the sun and broke up into small pieces and been ingested by marine life. After that, it would have gone up the food chain and fall into the mouth of the biggest fish you and I!
5 - Maybe this little bottle would have been taken by the currents to so-called “islands of garbage” in the North Atlantic or Pacific, where there are 20 million tons of pure garbage, and that’s enough to cover the WHOLE SURFACE of south america!
Now, think about it: every time you do the right thing with the recycled garbage that’s in your hands, or that you find by the way… you could even say to yourself just like the priests (those who have already been to mass, you know): ” Holy, holy, holy is the house of God!”
But isn’t it the truth…? I don’t want any of this in the mouths of these beautiful, wonderful, majestic animals that I love so much and who are all around me!
Look at that pelican, last week, here near my home.
How could I ever do any damage to a creature like that?
