Almost everyone gets a bit melancholy, feeling the absence of loved ones and often very depressed at the end of the year and during the holiday season – each one has his reasons.

It was not to my surprise, after having noticed it that both here and in Brazil, and having learned through my daughter Julia and psychology that the months of November and December are the most sought after for therapy.

Maybe we expect too much of this day, ‘packaging’ all the kindness of humanity in just one day of the year, I don’t know. I just know that these emotions are not felt so strongly at other annual celebrations.

Some feel ‘homesick’ like me, others feel ‘homesick’ despite being ‘at home’. All this, because it’s a special day which means companionship…

What I want all of you to know is that in this great country there are several places where you can find help, whether pro-bono or for a very low price — according to what you can afford.

For example, there are Therapist and Psychologist agencies, Group Support for Depression, the AAAs. If you don’t earn much, you can use Medicaid. If you served in the army, navy, or airforce, there are support groups for veterans, as well as universities which offer therapy sessions with the teacher’s supervision for a price you can afford, or simply paying anything.

Our feelings during this time of year and especially during the celebration of Christmas, last much longer than any gift that you give or receive. For this reason, appreciation is the most valuable thing you can give someone, more than any material gift. It’s appreciation which makes Christmas time so special and precious for everyone.

Remember that every gift, large or small, means: AFFECTION.

Give your gifts with love, and receive yours with pleasure and gratitude. Open them at that time and be grateful all year, keeping a ‘Christmas’ heart and an open heart all 365 days in 2010.

And do not get into debt buying gifts and spending on decorations, and paying with next year’s money. This only makes everything worse.
