The First Day

The first day of the year. The rain and heavy fog are finally gone and a beautiful sun came out for the start of a new decade. It’s beautiful enough to make you totally forget the problems of the economy and any other worries.

It even seems that spring is just around the corner, instead of the strong winter that awaits us in February.

The heat and lack of wind last week, makes you want to open the windows and get fresh air into the house.

The birds come here and like to drink the same water the cats drink during the strong Texan summer.

The squirrels like to hide their nuts and in the spring small chestnut trees sprout up everywhere. This one sleeps on a broken branch of my neighbor’s tree, which has extended over to my side. I created this effect in the photo, because not only is the tree is gray but they are also.

Another lazy day under the sun, waiting for the squirrels to wake up. “SQUIRREL WATCHERS ALWAYS ON THE ALERT!”, is the motto practiced with joy and enthusiasm every day.

The shells are the promise of next summer, with each wave they get closer, now that winter’s passing, and every day is a little longer than the previous one. Today the tide was low and the waves were bigger.

Later, when the light from the first day of the decade began its inevitable march to the evening, a decision has to be made… stay here again drinking in the last rays of sun before the darkness?

Not without having one of my favorite dishes and a New Year’s tradition in my beloved Brazil: LENTILS!

And Afterwards…

Go for protection from cold night, that will surely arrive, wrapped in a soft pillow and in the arms of Mr.Slipper Socks Man for a perfect Farewell to the first day.
