Baby-proof

Whether you are traveling during Christmas and New Years or staying at the home of relatives or friends… Remember that perhaps the house is not prepared against accidents involving small children and babies.

For certain, you should always ask about potential hazards in a place beforehand, especially where small children are going to sleep…

But if you don’t want to have to do this, just put the following on your list or bag right now:

♦ A portable crib and monitor (an adult bed or sleeping on the floor is not safe).

♦ If the house has stairs, a babygate that expands. (Any WalMart carries them.)

♦ Inflatable bathtub.

♦ A little nightlight.

♦ Covers for faucets.

♦ Door handle covers (prevent kids from turning).dream-baby-door-knob-covers

♦ Plastic zip ties to secure cabinets. They are very cheap and commonly used to tie wires and cables.zip ties

All this because: prevention is the First Aid of him who was uninjured.

You can rent this all at: babysaway.com, babytravelpros.com, thetravelingbabyco.com — they are scattered throughout the country.

Promise of Happiness

I always have a lots of questions for the doctors…

Going the dermatologist, was no different… After all, beauty is a promise of happiness, isn’t it? ;-)

QUESTIONS TO MY DERMATOLOGIST:

ME: It is true that ointment for hemorrhoids depuffs the eyes?

SHE: Yes, but not American cremes, only those made in Canada, because those have BioDyne that reduces swelling (an ingredient banned in the USA years ago).

ME: Do I need to use expensive products on my skin?

HER: If they make you feel incredible, yeah, it’s worth it… Otherwise, it’s not necessary.

ME: Do you think we really need Botox?

HER: My customers, those who look great, are those who stopped eating processed food. This is much better than Botox. If you quit eating this type of food, you’ll have a better appearance, lose weight and feel younger. Abusing the “fillers” and using lots of Botox results in what we dermatologists call the “frozen allien look”.  Less is much better than the “in-office procedures”. It’s not all about what you put on your skin, but also what you put into your body.

ME: What every woman under 40 should know?

HER: Stop smoking and using tanning salons. I see young patients with melanoma every week.

ME: What do I need to avoid?

HER: Use less the soap on your face. It strips the skin’s natural oils and makes it look dull. And less moisturizer… If your skin is not too dry, sun protection is enough.

ME: Do people with dark skin need sunscreen?

HER: Yes, they also get skin cancer, and SPF prevents irregularities when they enter their 30s.

ME: What is good to eat in the morning and good for the skin?

HER: Greek yogurt with blueberries, 6 almonds and a little agave nectar.

Well, getting old is a privilege that many do not have….

Be sure to recommend this blog to your friends. Many many thanks! :-)

Photo Tips

As I said in the introduction of the blog: “the middle child in me makes me want to walk with a camera under my arm all the time!

I do not know how many thousands of photos I have in my computer. But I gradually learned a few things here and there by much trial and error…

With digital cameras, I became fanatic for photos! :-)

Before this blog, Mr.Slipper Socks Man, would ask me from time to time: ‘but why do you have to take a picture of that …?’

‘Not now…’ ;-)

At the end of the year, it’s traditional to take professional photos and make Christmas cards from them. I think I can contribute a little, save you a little money, and reveal of my secrets …

  • Use a digital with the minimum of 3 to 4 megapixels, this ensures that the pictures are sufficiently clear.
  • Before you start shooting, ‘clean’ the scene by clearing away many details that usually exist. Leave ZERO details. If you do not have a wall with nothing on it, hang a white sheet in the background.
  • As indirect light helps a lot, place people a few steps away from the window or turn on a lamp so that it reflects on the ceiling or a wall nearby. Do not put light directly in front or behind people or objects, if it can be helped.
  • if you’re shooting outdoors, do not do it at noon, so as to avoid squinty eyes and heavy shadows. I love to take a pictures early in the morning or at dusk.
  • I have already mentioned in a recent post, as the tip of a professional friend: enjoy the moment! Not everyone needs to be like ‘stick figures’.
  • If you are taking photos under falling snow, put the camera in ‘SPORTS’ mode, because the picture comes out faster. On my own, I like using the zoom, especially at those moments, and I use it a lot, because I’m always shooting dogs that do not won’t stay still. :-)
  • If it’s Santa Claus, show the children a photo of the bearded old man. If you are in the line to do this, back away from it a little and show what the other children are doing …But I think the best are the ones where the children are looking at Santa Claus with a ’suspicious’ look or are crying … :-)
  • if the Christmas tree in the background is lit up: turn off the flash, because new cameras are super sensitive to light, so you get the natural glow (in the daytime) and still use the ambient lights. The fact is, I’m not so into the subject of ‘photography’. After I take a shot, they are saved, and I don’t mess with them any more… Hunters are not always are good cooks … :-) A famous photographer said, I forgot his name: “‘The color photos show the clothes, and black and white people’s souls…”I think you can photograph thoughts and feelings.

    My Idol

My idol has autism, but also has a PhD.

    temple-grandin-with-horse

She’s Professor at the University of Colorado, gives speeches around the world about autism and how to handle animals and learn about their behavior.

Because of her, more than half the cattle in the USA, are managed in a more humane system in their final moments (thanks to her invention).

Watch this film, the true story of Temple Grandin: INNOVATOR, AUTHOR, ACTIVIST and AUTISTIC.

I never had the patience to watch any movie scenes with the director’s comments. Boring!

In this one I made a point of it because Temple Grandin, in her own words confirm all events shown here.

    Temple-Grandin-Movie-Poster

Below, whoever would like to, can watch her talk with excellent subtitles in Portuguese and many other languages.

    Where she explains:

♦ How an autistic person sees the world and why it’s ALL in ‘Google Images’.

♦ Why, when an autistic is good at something, is excellent, and is weak in something, is very bad.

♦ How do animals see things, and what scares them.

♦ Why we have to show kids interesting things.

♦ How animals’ thoughts are based on the senses.

♦ Why it’s super essential that children have mentors.

♦ Why Van Gogh created the kind paintings he did.

And in 1 hour or so, I learned from her that:

♥ if we find a path with no obstacles, it probably does not lead us to anything.

♥ and I can not lock up my dreams with my fears. They have to be smaller than my faith.
